Discharge resistors are devices used to, as the name implies, discharge capacitors to safe voltage levels after power down, and also to discharge batteries during testing.

Discharge Resistor Types

Discharge resistors present two different types of filter: the SVC static compensators and the HVDC system. The former are used to compensate for the circulation of reactive power in electrical networks.

That is why they are used to transmit power, obtain better performance in distribution and control reactive power.

It should be noted that inductors and capacitors allow harmonic currents to be diverted towards the resistance, where they are safely dissipated.

The HVDC system, on the other hand, is used to transmit electricity in direct current at high voltage. When turned on, the pre-insertion resistor limits the charging current of the capacitors and the cable.

When the equipment stops, the DC cable remains charged (high capacity) and the energy is evacuated by discharging the cable.

It is important to note, especially if you have no previous experience with this type of device, that a discharge resistor can be energized through the capacitor, which allows a fast discharge without dissipation at rest.

And also that it is possible to keep it permanently connected, due to its high reliability and low cost.
